<image:caption>Exploring the world with my dog and a cold press. I’m Erik, a marketing specialist for the hospitality industry turned UX Designer. I’m passionate about discovery and helping people. My past professional career has many similarities to the world of UX Design. Planning a beer festival at US BANK Stadium, developing a marketing strategy for a new IPA brand or driving traffic to a restaurant patio during the summer all have the same thing in common. They all focus on discovering the needs of people and understanding how to help them.</image:caption>

Even if employers don’t agree with you, they’ll still have a better idea of who you are as a person. Share your story – Personal details about where you grew up, how you got into design, or how many cats you own will complement your work experience. It may even explain your particular style or connect the dots between projects. Be real – Feel free to stray away from business topics. Meals are picked up by Food Finder drivers and delivered to user’s homes. The company launched in 2017 and is currently only available in the Twin Cities Market. <image:title>Food Finder Case Study (Graveyard) - Solution</image:title>
<image:caption>My research revealed there were people in the target market that were not using a food delivery app in the age of COVID-19 because they felt overwhelmed by the options in delivery. They wanted delivery, but never knew which dish was “best” or what to order. These users were people whom were very interested in guided meal selections, a role that was usually filled by a server in a restaurant. As a result of this discovery, a prototype was created with a smaller selection in a more guided experience. Photo by Jessie McCall on Unsplash</image:caption>

<image:title>Food Finder Case Study (Graveyard) - Problem</image:title>
<image:caption>Since launch, Food Finders has yet to find a reliable user base in the the market. While business rivals saw their user rate skyrocket in the age of COVID-19, Food Finder did not. A research study was commissioned to understand users in the market and how to best serve them. The client wants a full redesign of the app.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After a heuristic analysis, research, and evaluations it was uncovered that Prime’s Full-stack students shared 4 key values. They are brand, collection, creation, and community. The best way for Prime to provide value to their students in a meaningful way was to gift an object that appealed to those 4 values. My solution is a vase.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After a round of critiques with fellow UX Designers, I moved forward with the vase proposal and created a low-fedility prototype for evaluation. This vase was selected as a welcome gift for several reasons. Assuming users want to feel connected to other students, this vase serves as a physical manifestation of their class. It serves as a totem for users to form an emotional attachment through. Assuming users curate collections of objects in their study space, this vase was selected to be included in such a collection. At its core, the full stack program is about creating, this vase can be used in a variety of ways, allowing users to create their own use for it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Snow Swaps - Key takeaways from my research</image:title>
<image:caption>Discovery: The user only interacts with these types of websites right before ski season starts, then not again until the next season. Impact: That means we need to design the site expecting users have forgotten how to interact with it. Discovery: Parents are dissatisfied with the current competitors in the marketplace, single users without children are not. Impact: Time and energy should be uses to maximize the value focused to parents. They will be the best target market when the website launches. Discovery: Users have no confidence in current sites. Impact: Knowing that the users want to have confidence in the program helps us make choices to maximize for that value.</image:caption>

<image:title>Snow Swaps - Research Protocol</image:title>
<image:caption>The next step in my research was to design a protocol for remote contextual inquiry. While I enjoy hitting the slopes on a brick Minnesota day, I am not the user for this website. I had a lot to learn about ski clubs, racing teams and the world of ski swaps. Because the client is looking to launch in a crowded competitive marketplace, I started this protocol with questions exploring the users relationship with those competitors. I wanted to understand what our users both liked and didn’t like about those websites. Also, I included questions about the life of the user. I wanted to understand what it was like to be the parent of a fast growing teen on a ski racing team.</image:caption>

<image:title>Snow Swaps - Cognitive Walkthrough</image:title>
<image:caption>To begin my research, I started with a cognitive walkthrough. I wanted to understand the current status of the website. I evaluated tasks from the design brief sent by the client and uncovered opportunities for improvement across the site.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After the final revision to the wireframes in my notebook, it was time to digitize them using sketch. I worked within their current brand colors, icons and site architecture. I wanted to unsure changes I made both brought value to the users as well as stayed within brand for the website. <image:title>Harmony Cricket Farm Case Study - Key takeaways from my research</image:title>
<image:caption>Organization: Participants could not find answers to their own questions on the site, a new Hierarchy of existing information can help fix this. Legibility: Participants struggles to read some of the copy, updating format, copy and font size can help alleviate this. Engagement: Participants were disappointed when engaging with the blog and nutritional information, a new format, organization and titles can help energize this. Transparency: Participants wanted information if that was not available on the site, new copy can help address this. Accessibility: Participants using screen readers would not be able to understand important parts of this site, removing .jpg files containing text will solve this.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Enneagram is a test dividing users into 9 different profiles to gain context and insight into interpersonal dynamics. The test identified me as Type 3: The Achiever. According to the Enneagram Institute “Threes know how good it feels to develop themselves and contribute their abilities to the world, and also enjoy motivating others to greater personal achievements than others thought they were capable of.” This resonates we me on a personal level, I always want myself and those around me to grow and better themselves. As a UX Designer, that comes in the form of helping users identify problems and finding solutions for them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Good Design is beautiful and reflects itself all around me. I appreciate the well worn hiking trail that curves the river with grace, the Manhattan with the perfect ratio of whiskey to vermouth and the painting with the unique color palette. All of these designs inspire me, and I celebrate them in my practice. I am a a11y and believe everyone deserves empathetic design.</image:caption>

<image:title>Finotta Case Study - Key takeaways from my research</image:title>
<image:caption>After synthesizing my research, I uncovered 5 key values to incorporate to help Finotta reach the business goals for their next release. Those 5 key values are Explanation, Visualization, Iconification, Gamifacation and Interactivity. By addressing these 5 key values, we will achieve the 4 project goals from the creative brief. These takeaways were conceptualized and created by me. The image above is taken directly from the report submitted to the client.</image:caption>

<image:title>Finotta Case Study - Competitive Audit</image:title>
<image:caption>To begin my research, and better understand the project space, I started with a Competitive Audit. My team and looked at how other business in the market were achieving the 4 goals set out by finotta. We divided the goals and each of us analyzed several competitors. The audit revealed there were many features offered by competitors that finotta did not.</image:caption>

<image:title>Finotta Case Study - User Journey Map</image:title>
<image:caption>To visualize the experience of Finotta users as they interact with the app, I created a journey map. I wanted a good way to show how users attitudes change throughout their different stages of engagement. This is the final version of the journey map showing the current version of the app and the next version with the proposed features. This journey map was conceptualized and created by me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Finotta Case Study - Stakeholder Interview</image:title>
<image:caption>The next phase of research was the Stakeholder Interview. As a notetaker, I payed close to listen to the goals of the business, so I could design features that would support both their users and their business goals. Finotta Business Goals Increase engagement during onboarding Advance gamification concepts for incentivizing financial behavior change Leverage microinteractions for encouragement and support of behavior Integrate accessibility consideration</image:caption>

<image:title>Finotta Case Study - Rapid Ideation</image:title>
<image:caption>We had a very tight turnaround time on this project. As a brainstorm, the team and I individually crafted low-fidelity feature cards during a rapid ideation session. We then shared our ideas on an InVision whiteboard and used an affinity diagram to sort them by feature. With my 5 key values in mind, I submitted 3 feature cards to our team whiteboard. <image:title>Finotta Case Study - Annotated Wireframes</image:title>

<image:title>Finotta Case Study - Kano Analysis</image:title>
<image:caption>Before making the final decision on which features to propose, our team sent out a Kano Analysis. The top two Features revealed by the Kano were “Celebrations” and “Guided Introduction.” Both of those features made it into my final recommendations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Finotta Case Study - Tech Estimation</image:title>
<image:caption>Our team assembled all the feature cards on an Invision board for a meeting with the Finotta Chief Technical Officer. <image:caption>Northstar Behavioral Heath has a passionate team of Heath Care professionals working to provide support and care for people on their recovery journey from Stimulant and Opioid use. My role in this session was as notetaker. I paid very close attention to not just what the goals of the organization was, but WHY those were their goals.</image:caption>

<image:title>NBH Case Study - Key takeaways from the research</image:title>
<image:caption>Discovery: In an article found by a teammate, the author stated “the opposite of addiction is connection.” Impact: We used this as a guiding principle for our work. In every feature we would recommend, “Connection” would be the key takeaway. Discovery: One major reason for Peloton’s success is they focus on building community, and using fitness as the backbone of that community. In this light, one could classify Peloton as more digital social network than fitness program. Impact: Mirroring Peloton, we would prose a wraparound solution to build community. MY ROLE-> I synthesized the data I collected</image:caption>

<image:title>NBH Case Study - Secondary Research</image:title>
<image:caption>After our Stakeholder Interview, the team and I started our Secondary research. Each three of my research initiatives were pulled directly from our Stakeholder interview. (Yes, we had a stakeholder who was very passionate about Peloton.) MY ROLE-> I had 3 ares of focus: How to make people feel safe and empowered in an app. What is an assessment like? How does peloton build community?</image:caption>

<image:title>NBH Case Study - Finding Help</image:title>
<image:caption>Currently: An individual looking for help online from Northstar Behavioral Help would visit northstarbehavioralhealthmn.com This website has an explanation of treatment, photos of the treatment centers and quotes from clients. It also prominently features a phone number to receive an Assessment. New Strategy: OShelp.com, a new mobile website designed to get individuals the information fast. This would be a second mobile experience in addition to their current URL. OShelp.com is short for Opioid Stimulant Help. Explanation: In our stakeholder interview, we learned the opportunity window where individuals choose to get help is small and time is working against us. Working with proto-personas I created, I realized the current website did not meet the needs of all of our users. We needed a URL that was short and easy to remember (whether read on a poster or word of month) and optimized for a low broadband experiences. With the short time window, there was not space to download new app to your phone or visit a website with lots of big pictures or even scroll through a large menu. This site needed to be quick, helpful and easy to understand. We need to meet the individuals where there are, regardless on their internet connection. This new strategy helps individuals find help easily with a mobile website designed specifically to help people suffering from Opioid and Stimulant use disorder. MY ROLE-> I worked on the strategy for this feature</image:caption>

<image:title>NBH Case Study - Location Tracking</image:title>
<image:caption>Currently: North Star Behavioral offers mobile assessments with a van. New Strategy: Mirroring the interface from current ride share apps, a GPS tracker would be installed on the Mobile Assessment Unit. A text with a link to the tracker would be sent to the individuals phone so they would know help is on the way and could track how far it is. Explanation: As mentioned above, the opportunity window where individuals choose to get help is small. Showing the GPS location of the van on the way to help them gives individuals something to focus on. There is reassurance and comfort in seeing the GPS of the van moving closer and closer to them. MY ROLE-> I created low fidelity wireframes for this feature</image:caption>

<image:title>NBH Case Study - Building Community</image:title>
<image:caption>Currently: All community building is done In person New Strategy: A new community app for people participating in the North Star Behavioral Health recovery community. This app would feature a message board, calendar of events and a helpful topics sections. Individuals would receive a text with a download link when they begin their recovery journey. Explanation: Our project mantra from our research “the opposite of addiction is connection” is our driving inspiration for this strategy. To help individuals on their recovery journey, we’re building a world of meaningful connections in their hand and filling it with a variety of ways to use it. For people looking to make new connections, there are message boards about a variety of topics like SciFi Movies, gardening, and Italian cooking. For people looking for something to do with their new Northstar friends, the community app has a calendar filled with real world and virtual events like yoga, movies in the park and hiking around a lake. While on their recovery journey, they now have the opportunity to connect with others going though the same experience. <image:title>NBH Case Study - Immediate Connection</image:title>
<image:caption>Currently: Northstar Behavioral Help has a phone line dedicated to quickly setting up an Assessment (to begin the recovery journey.) It is front and center on their current URL. New Strategy: Creating a crisis hotline specifically focused on providing emotional support to people who are starting or on their recovery journey. This new crisis hotline would be heavily inspired by other national hotlines like the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Depression Hotline and focus on Opioid and Stimulant disorder. Explanation: During our research, my teammate discovered there is no crisis hotline for Opioid and Stimulant disorder. This is a huge opportunity space. These is a need for people (at any point on their recovery journey) to immediately connect with someone who can help.</image:caption>

<image:title>LFC Case Study - Key takeaways from my research</image:title>
<image:caption>Discovery: Dealing with Social Media is taking up too much time for the Client Impact: During our stakeholder interview, our client explained they were spending ‘way too much time” on social media, and wanted to instead focus on the literacy program and raising money. Discovery: To get to the next level, Legacy Family Center needs more funding. Impact: This discovery meant I needed to included a communication strategy with philanthropic messages too.</image:caption>

<image:title>LFC Case Study - No Amplification</image:title>
<image:caption>For all the time and effort, the client was not getting a return on their social media. <image:title>LFC Case Study - Time Consuming</image:title>
<image:caption>After researching Legacy Family Center’s virtual footprint, It was easy to understand why the client was having a hard time with it. <image:caption>Mirroring the posting frequency and content theme of other nonprofits in the space, I delivered a post library with my recommendations report. This library had a posting date, content and recommend image. The images were delivered to the client in a dropbox folder with the report. The report encouraged the client to use hootsuite to schedule out posts throughout the summer. With this, the client can spend 2 hours to setup, then copy and paste into the software and not need to worry about another social media post until the fall.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our second survey, a Kano Analysis that calculated the desirability of features, revealed that our users expected to have multiple ways to visualize and access data. It also told us having a customizable dashboard was a feature that delighted and surprised users. These results directly lead to the design design to create a very customizable experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Provision Case Study - Survey</image:title>
<image:caption>Our First survey had 57 responses from potential users. One key result that stood out to us was 60% of respondents are looking for ways to improve their charitable giving habits. This was good as it showed there was a viable audience for the client to engage with. MY ROLE-> I edited questions and added stock photography to the survey so responds would have a more enjoyable experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Provision Case Study - Level Up the Community</image:title>
<image:caption>The idea of turning every day tasks into something fun with a game is a buzzworthy concept in the technology world at the moment. The Client’s initial research suggested we find a way to “gamify” provision and assign points for donating. Our surveys revealed that is not something our users wanted. Instead of the gamification of generosity, we changed the concept. Now, users would work to level up the community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In our first survey, 56% of potential users stated they wanted help with finances. Our client was very passionate about helping these users. He wanted all of Provision’s users to have financial stability. To support that goal, we added a learning center featuring podcasts, articles, and videos. This media would be produced by Provision and center around growing wealth and reaching financial stability. MY ROLE-> I created original wireframes for this feature.</image:caption>

<image:title>Provision Case Study - Donating Time To Inspire generosity in users</image:title>
<image:caption>Not everyone has the money to donate. In our survey, 60% of potential users were looking for ways to improve their charitable giving habits. As an alternative to donating money, users were encouraged to donate time. Time then needed to be graphed, visualized and forecasted in a similar way to money. We designed a widget to show users how much available time they could have to focus on generosity. MY ROLE-> I created the high fidelity wireframes for the prototype</image:caption>
